“The Future with Chrome-free Etching and Trivalent Chromium Plating: Carbon Footprint and Hotspot Analysis of a Decorative Surface Finishing Line” - Darrick Gula, MKS Atotech

Take a deep dive into decorative plating and discuss the industry’s shift away from Hexavalent chromium. Trivalent alternatives, along with PFAS free wetter solutions will be reviewed in order to showcase how platers can plan effectively to flip towards a more green and sustainable future. We also will examine a life cycle potential analysis based on ISO standards 14040 and 14044. This analysis was conducted in collaboration with a neutral project partner. External specialists were enlisted for a project that involved collecting carbon footprint data for a selected group of representative products, from cradle-to-gate. Alongside the carbon footprint analysis, learn about the thorough investigation conducted on three prominent coating technologies used for shiny metallic chrome or chrome-like surface finishes considering the entire lifecycle of each product.

“Optimizing Controls and Reducing Rework with Alkaline Zinc” - Chad Murphy, Columbia Chemical

Rework is a plating shop’s pain point. You’re not getting paid to run parts twice. Many defects can begin with pretreatment issues. To maximize efficiency and throughput in zinc plating, the importance of proper pretreatment and well-established controls cannot be overstated. This talk will discuss the critical steps of properly preparing the substrate surface through cleaning, degreasing, and activation to ensure optimal adhesion, corrosion resistance and overall finish of the plated part. We will also review the importance of effective controls to keep the operating parameters in range and look at using your weekly bath analysis and hull cell panel evaluations to identify problems in advance and take action to help keep your costs down, save time and decrease rejects.

3:45 - 4:00PM
